A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
